Four Newcastle pits are idle owing to disputes. The Labour Conference adopted a resolution in favor of the abolition ol night-work in bakehouses and the application of the early closing principle throughout the State, limiting the sale of tobacco everywhere, including hotels and ferry boats, to the same hours. Mr Griffith was absent. The country motion censuring him- for not carrying out the Arbitration Court awards was therefore postponed. VICTORIAN POLITICS; . Melbourne, February 4. The. State Parliament is appointing a Royal .Commission to inquire into the ill-success of the closer settlement policy. THE SHIPPING COMBINE. Sydney, February 4. Further details of the recently-re-ported Australasian shipping combine have been received. The title is the Commonwealth and Dominion - Line, Limited. Besides the Milburn, Tyser and Reyden fleets, it will include five Star liners—twenty-five steamers altogether,. with a tonnage of 166,875. Most of the vessels have extensive refrigerating space, while some will cater for the immigrant' traffic. THE B.M.A. CHAIRMAN.
