BOARD OF AGRICULTURE.

APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS. The following letter has been forwarded to the Stratford A. and P. Association by Mr J. B. Cotinett, president of the Taranaki Agricultural and Pastoral Association:—

"1 beg to forward herewith a, copy of a letter which I have received from the Secretary of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, covering a copy or the regulations under the Board of' Agriculture Act and explaining briefly the procedure to be adopted in connection with the recommendation by Agricultural and Pastoral Societies'of persons for appointment to the Board. You will see that it devolves on me to call a meeting of delegates, at which the person to represent our group ol societies'can be selected, and 1 forward herewith a notice in regard to the time and place of the meeting."

Tho notice mentioned fixed the time of meeting at 10.30 a.m. on Monday, February 9th, at the Stratford A. and P. Association's offices.

The letter from the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture to the president of the Taianaki Association was as follows:—"! have the honor to bring under your notice that by the Board of Agriculture Art, 191 '\ provision is made for the setting up of a Hoard to advise the Minister on questions in connection with the purposes of agriculture and other rural industries. Of the members of the Board eight (four in each Island) are to he appointed on the recommendation of societies incorporated under the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies' Act, such recommendation to lie made in the manner prescribed by the regulations under the Act. The regulations have just boon issued, and as directed therein I now take the preliminary steps of ascertaining the wishes of the societies. Briefly stated, the regulations provide for the division of each Island into four districts, from the so-

cieties in each of which a recommendation is asked. One society, callet for distinguishing purposes the Met ropolitan Society, is selected in eacl district to take the initiative in &&■

curing a recommendation lor the appointment of a representative of all the societies in the district. A meeting will be called by the president of the Metropolitan Society, to which every incorporated society in the district wii! be invited to send a delegate or delegates, according to the number | of members on its roll. Delegates | must be members of the society, or the latter may appoint a member of another society to represent it it unable to send one of its own members. At the meeting nominations will be received for appointment to the Hoard, and, if necessary, a vote will be taken. Particulars of the decision come to at tlfe meeting are to be sent to the Minister for Agriculture. As. will be seen, your society is named in the the Metropolitan Society, and I forward herewith a list of all societies in your district incorporated under the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies' Act, who will alone have a voice in the; appointment of a member of the Board. The meeting must be held prior to February 21st. The procedure at the meeting is governed in part of the regulations. I would point out that within three days after the meeting the result should be notified to the Minister for Agriculture. 1 feel sure that societies will heartily co-operate ir giving effect to the provisions of the Act, and that'a Board will be constituted of gentlemen representative of the farming community and whose advice will be of the greatest assistance to this Department."
