Cresus Voasquet, a music hall manager, obtained special trunks filled with sand, and pasted labels on them for different destinations.
A confederate made a declaration that the baggage contained valuable theatrical property. Several railway employees were parties to the conspiracy, and removed ' the trunks at junctions during the journey, affixing false duplicate numbers corresponding on the receipt. The police discovered the trickery.
The railways paid indemnities on lost luggage amounting to £BO,OOO a vear.
