A SOLICITOR CHARCED.

Christehiirch, January 27

. At the Magistrate's Court H. J. Beswick, solicitor, was charged with a breach of the Gaming Act in having as chairman of the recent JDomain Fete sanctioned an art union with a trip to-Australia as a prize. The information was laid under Section 42, but Mr Harper, for the defence, objected. The trip could not be regarded as a work of art. The information was amended by the substitution of section 41. The Magistrate expressed his 'unwillingness to convict Beswick. Personally, he thought the offence was undoubted. Mr Harper suggested that the police, withdraw the information in order to avoid; conviction, the purpose of the prosecution being served by recognition of |.the offence. Sub-Inspector' McKinnon consented, and an adjournment was made in order to consult authorities.
