Xi'ghtwateh; Mowbray, Rinaldo, Sahdmrg, Warstep, Flora McDonald, Troon, Britain Crown. Triumpliator. Palisade, Firmhold, Lady Marcia, Masterpiece, Parable, Ogier and Gapon. DUNEDIN CUP.

Writes "Sentinel" in the Otago Daily Times.—lt is a far cry back to the time when a lOOOsovs "stake was first offered in Dunedin, and this took place in 1863, when the Champion Stakes of that year was won by Ladybird, and formed the chief event of a four days' meeting. The fortunes of the sport have fluctuated a great deal since that day, when Ladybird won a race which was the event of the then Australasian season. The growth and expansion of racing in the North Island tended to put Dunedin a bit out of tlie running, and a combination of circumstances appeared to block the way to success, and so much of the glamor which surrounded our old-time meetings fell away. From 1877 to 1884 the Dunedin Cup stood at oOOsovs, and then jumped to lOOOsovs, when Vanguard won in 1885. Nelson's year and that of Spade Guinea were each marked with a lOOOsovs race, and as 11. J. Mason has always displayed a penchant for gathering the rich plums growing on the New Zealand turf, it is interesting to recall that he trained two out of the three winners of the lOOOsovs Dunedin Cups. Gipsy King year saw another Cup winner from It. J. Mason's stable, but the stake had shrunk to 700sovs, and a few years later to oOOsovs. It is very pleasing to see a time-honored race back to its old financial magnetism, and there seems ample ground for assuming that it will mount still higher during the next couple- of seasons. At present it does altogether stand out in solitary grandeur, but is backed up by the D.J.C Handicap of oOOsovs, the Anniversary of 300sovs, and Publicans', of 350sovs, the Champagne Stakes, of 300sovs, and two others that carry stakes of 200sovsi, and 250sovs each. . "~ AUSTRALIAN NEWS. V.y Elkotrio Telegraph —Copyright) [United Press Association.J Sydney, January 25. The Challenge Stakes resulted: Golden Hop 1, Nuwara Eliya 2, Gigandra 3. Fifteen starters. Won by a length, two lengths between second and third. Time, lmin Usee. BETTINC INDUCEMENTS. (Received 9.15 a.m.)

London, January 25

The Newspaper Sporting Advertisoment Control Association has condemned in its present form the Betting Inducements Bill, which Mr H. K. Newton, M.P., is reintroducing. Lord Lonsdale wrote supporting the suppression of tipsters' and bookmakers' circulars, hut ho did not favor stopping all the bookmakers' advertisements in the newspapers.

A Paris cablegram spates that as the outcome of a gambling incident at the Jockey Club, six aristocratic members have been summoned before a magistrate.
