The first day of the championships attracted 3000 people.' The weather was hot and dusty, with a north wind. The track was excellent. The three miles championship aroused the greatest enthusiasm of the day. The race resolved itself into a great struggle betweenO'Neill (Victoria), and Beatson (New Zealand). After a mile they drew level and ran practically abreast until the bell rang. Beatson made a wonderful finish, winning by seven yards. He dropped exhausted alter passing the tape. Power, an American, ran to his assistance, and applied a wet towel to Beatson's head. He soon recovered, and on leaving the ground was cheered to the echo. In the high jump Kelly, the Victorian, lowered his own record. Points : Victoria 3, New Zealand 1, New South Wales 1, Queensland 1. Results:— Mile walk.—Pickard (New South Wales) 1, Murray (Victoria) 2, Cox (Victoria) 3. Won by seven yards. Time, 6n«n -losec (world's record, Gmin 23see). 100yds.—Parker (America) 1, Burton (Victoria) 2, Bradley (New South Wales) 3. Won by 18in. in 10 l-ssec. The Stratford Swimming Club is losing no time in getting to work, and a 50yds club race is to be held at the bath this evening. Every member of the clnb has been handicapped, so that all who turn up can have a swim. The fust heat is timed to start at 0 o'clock. The Now Plymouth Club has two club races set down for decision tonight. The West Coast championships are to be decided at Hawera on Wednesday.
