The- Ellwood Trio, the gifted New. Zealand musicians', are not unknown in Stratford, and those who heard them oh their previous visit will give them a good welcome at the Town Mall this evening. The bright particular "star of the combination, of course, is George Elhvood, who is justifiably called "the New Zealand Gerardy," and when, as was the case, Gerardy becomes enthusiastic over a person's playing, that person can confidently be set down afP o& mi or of more than ordinary merit. Harry Elhvood, violinist, and Polly Ellwood, pianist, are also performers of merit. The company will have the assistance on the present occasion of Mr Arthur Macdonald, baritone, who recently won the New Zealand championship in the competitions held in Wellington. HIS MAJESTY'S PICTURES. Last nighPs series embraced a magnificent variety of first-class films. •'London by Night," by Barker Co., of British actors, ftands alone for genuine thrilling life by night in the great city. To-morrow evening, Victor Hugo's French masterpiece, ''lies Miserable*," 12,000 feet in length, lasting over 2J hours, will lie screened in one grand series. Owing to the length of this marvellous picture, the performance will commence at 8 sharp. The story is an object lesson, setting forth the lirutalising effect of cruel injustice and the ennobling influence of kindness. Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread to save his dying sister and is captured and sentenced to penal servitude. Javert, the brutal jailor, tortures the prisoner, who subsequently escapes. Being at war with sOciety, he steals again. The man he robbed gives him another chance, and a new life opens. He" becomes a man honored, and does many kind things until he again comes into the power of the terrible jailor Javert. Before his capture he meets Fantine, and promises her he will look after her little child Cosette. After being put into jail for the second time lie again escapes and makes his way to the village to find Cosette. He rescues her and takes here away with him to Paris. Ao;ain he is discovered by the jailor Javert, and forced to flee. He spends many years in the seclusion of a convent, Cosette growing up in the care of the nuns. Then Valjean decides to take Cosette out into,the world, so they reside in a quiet part of Paris. Cosette meets Marius and they mutually fall in loce. Valjean, during the French revolution, discovers that Javert is made a prisoner by the mob. He release:; him, and later when Javert is again in a position to arrest Valjean, he cannot do so. Valjean is forgotten by the two young lovers, until they realise almost too late how great and noble a character he bore. They arrive in time and with the Bishop gladden the moment when Valjean passes from "the night liehind which is dawn." Tickets may be obtained at the Theatre from 3 till I p.m. on Friday afternoon.
