The steamer Lusitania, homeward bound, encountered the brigantine .Mayflower, sinking. The first officer, Alexander, with a volunteer crew, launched the lifeboat. It was impossible to reach the sinking vessel, but they threw a line and belts, rescuing the crew through the raging sea.
