OPIUM SMOKING,

At the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Ah Joe was fined £5 -and costs for having opium in his possession. When the two men were arrested they

were in premises fitted up for opium smoking. According to police evidence, Ah Joe had £lO on him, and Young Sing had £270.

A CHINESE BRAWL.

Wellington, January 19

A serious fracas is reported as having taken place to-day on the Britishowned collier Herflete, at present lying at the Miramar wharf. The vessel arrived a few days ago, coalladen from Newcastle, and she carries a Chinese crew. Apparently, after an altercation aboard, two of tin Celestials, one armed with a crowbar, and the other with a hammer, attacked another man named Ah Fong, and inflicted very severe injuries upon him The 'man was taken to the hospital, where it was ascertained that hit condition was serious, his head being badly cut about, and the symptoms pointing to internal Injuries.

Consequent on the promotion of Mi- I). G. Cooper, Registrar of the Supreme Court, Wellington, to the Magistrates’ Bench, the following changes have been made by the Public Service Commissioner; —Mr W. A. Hawkins, Registrar of the Supreme Court at Christchurch, to be Registrar and Sheriff at the Supreme Court at Wellington. Mr A. H. Holmes, Clerk of the Court at Wellington, to be Registrar of the Supreme Court at Christchurch. Mr R. P- Ward. Clerk of the Court at Dunedin, to be Clerk of tlte Magistrate’s Court at Wellington. BURGLARY AT PAHIATUA.

Pahiatua, January 19

A sensational burglary was perpetrated at the premises of Messrs Clark and Manifold, drapers, some time between 9 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Monday. On entering the office, which is in the centre of the shop, shortly after 8 o’clock this morning, Mr T. W. Manifold, one of the principals, discovered that the safe containing about £l3O in cash and cheques had been broken open and the contents stolen.

WESTPORT HARBOR BOARD.

Westport, January 19. At the Westport Harbor Board meeting to-night, the following appointments were madeHarbormaster (£4OO a year), Captain I'urneaux; assistant secretary (£3OO a vear) Mr C. N. Greenland; junior clerk ’(£lso a year), Mr J. M. Sunley. . ~ It was decided to invite applications for the'combined position of marine "engineer and secretary, at a salary of £OOO a year, the position to be filled for one or two years, the idea being to acquire harbor data in that time, and then invite application for the position at £IOOO a year.
