UNLICENSED BARMAIDS.

Wellington, January 19

A hotelkeeper was charged at the Court with having employed an unregistered barmaid. The Inspector of Police said the hotel was well conducted, but the police discovered there a young woman who admitted she .had served in the hotel and that she had told defendant she was registered. However, the police thought the defendant- should have demanded to see the girl’s certificate. The prosecution was brought with the object of making licensees more careful. Mr Myers, for defendant, said his client had made reasonable inquiries. The list of registered barmaids contained the name of “Edith” Burton, whereas the girl’s name was Mary. While upholding the police in the view that licensees should require the production of certificates, the Magistrate said he was satisfied defendant acted in a bona fide manner and dismissed the case.
