Mi- Healy, inspector of machinery,
paid his usual visit of inspection along the eastern line on Tuesdav.
Mr B. Hume, of the Stratford branch of the Bank of Australasia, is at present on relieving duty at Whangamomona, Mr Baird, of tlie branch staff, being on holiday.
Mr Noble, the New South A> ales cricketer, was to-day married to Ellen, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Ferguson, of St. Peter's, Melbourne.—Sydney P.A. cablegram. The Rev; J. Lawson Robinsou, 8.A., of the First Church, Dunedin, accompanied by Mrs Robinson, arrived by express train last evening on a surprise visit to their Stratford relatives and will make a short stay onlv.
. The-following appointments of pupil teachers and probationers were made at a special meeting of the Education Board held yesterday:—Probationers: Tariki, Miss A. Mace; Leppcrton, M'ss L. Spence: Fitzroy, Miss A. W. Peach; Ngaere, Miss M. Norfolk, Miss Doris Robinson ; Stratford, Mr Jas. Cresswell; Central (New Plymouth), Miss N. IX Moore. Pupil teachers : West End: -Miss M. Lennon and iliss A. Harle : Waitara, Miss M. .Harrison ; Stratford. Misses R. James, B. Palmer, A. Kelleher, and Veta Coniey. The death is repotted from Tokio of Admiral Coiuu Yuko Ito, chief of the .Japanese naval general staff. He was born in 1843, entering the navy in lSb'S. He attained the rank of Lieut.-Commander in 1872. In 1877 he took part in the civil war. He was promoted to the post of captain in 1882, and was promoted to RearAcimiral 1886,' Yice-Admrral 1892. in 1891 lie fought the battle of the Yalu (China), being in complete command of the whole of the squadrons; He was appointed chief of the Naval Genet;!! Staff in 1895, and in 1898 was created a full Admiral.
