An inquiry was held at the gaol into the charges against the prisoners Albert McQueen and Harry Wilson of having done actual bodily harm to a warder and a prisoner, named Frisken. Anderson, who is storekeeper at the prison, was. in the store with Ids as-
sistant, Frisken. Accused rushed into the store and McQueen struck Frisken on the head with a heavy chisel. Wilson struck Anderson with a piece of iron pipe. The warder was partially stunned and felt one accused attempting to seize his keys, which would have enabled them to escape from gaol. He struggled out of the room and called for assistance. Warder Bemrose stated that when he went to assist Anderson Wilson tried to knock him down with an iron bar. Ho seized the bar and hit Wilson on the head with bis baton. With the assistance of another warder he overpowered Wilson. Both men pleaded guilty and were committed for trial. Wilson was sentenced at Auckland in August, 10T1, to fifteen years' imprisonment for indecent assault and McQueen wa# sentenced at Tnvercargill in August, 1910, to seven years for attempted rape, and he had his sentence increased by five years for an offence similar to that with which ho is now charged.
