An association of 120 smaller trade unions proposed to spend £55,000 in addition to £6394 annually on the erection of a so-called Workmen's Palace at Drury Lane. This will include a restaurant, cinematograph and meeting halls, a palm court for smoking, a lounge, and a luxurious billiard room. It is also proposed to supply provisions to the strikers at cost price, instead of issuing strike pay, thus enabling the union to save 3s 2d in every 10s. THE FAMINE IN JAPAN. Sydney, January 13. The Japanese authorities here consider the cabled statement that nine million people were suffering from famine in Japan was much exagger--1 ated, as the districts affected do no, I contain that number. They even consider if 900.000 was intended, that estimate is also too high. The famine is probably due to failure of crops.
