YOUTHFUL BURGLARS. [Phxi Press Association.] Wellington, January 12. Three lads, the eldest or whom is about 14 years of ago, made an attempt on Saturday night to burglarise the premises of -Mr I l '. 0. Reid, saddler, of Petoue. One of the boys had managed to secure a few stray shillings, which had been taken from a tin in the office, hut the other two had nothing of value ou them when searched.
DAMAGES ‘AGAINST MUNICH PALITY. Timaru, January 12. Anderson and Broun, building contractors, claimed from the Borough Council £545 for an alleged damage to a quarter-acre section and workshop through “tailing over” in making up a road. The case was referred to arbitration, and the umpire awarded £35, less costs.

Christchurch, January 12
A Christchurch party of six, including a medico and three ladies, who motored over to the West Coast, had an exciting experience on their return journey. When coming down the Gorge on this side, at one of the deepest pinches, a. holt gave way and disconnected the engine from con. 'troi. The car began to whirl down the steep road, with a sheer drop on one side and a bushy hank on the odier, almost instantly attaining a speed set down at something like 100 miles an hour. The chauffeur’s only control was that of the steering-wheel, and seeing in a flash the only alternative to a plunge of 30ft., he turned the car into the bush. It was badly smashed up, but the occupants escaped injury.

An, unusual case was brought before Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M., at the Police Court, when Arthur Stanley, alias Samuel Sidehottom, pleaded guilty to being an idle and disorderly person, and to have been habitually consorting with reputed "thieves. Tinpolice said that accused was one of a number of undesirable characters who lit cl been attracted to Auckland by the "Exhibition, and had been committing a number of offences, including theft and pocket picking. The whereabouts of the gang was recently discoverd, but they scattered. Accused had a very bad record, and the best,thing that could bo done was to. send hjfii out of the country. Mr Frazer, S.M., said that when a man came from outside the Dominion there could bo no injustice in
sending him back to the country from whence lie came. He warned accused to understand that if he came before the Court again there was a sentence, of three months’ hard labor waiting for him. He was convicted and ordered to leave the country by the first steamer.
SLY CROC CASES
Auckland, January 12
Two separate charges of sly grogselling wore brought against Wilbam Palmer at the Poliee Court to-day, before Mr K. C. Cutten, S.M., the date of the. alleged offences being the Tilth and 1-lth of December last, and were the outcome of a raid engineered by the police. The defence set up by Palmer was thqt the liquor was not sold, hut offered by way of hospitality, and the money handed over was accepted only on the understanding that it would be devoted to refilling the jar to continue the “treating’ ’of friendly visi-
tors. . Accused was convicted on both charges and fined -C2O.
