A MAIL-CARRIER DROWNED

The Superintendent ol' Police has | been advised that Daniel Lovell, 10 years of age, a single man, a mailcarrier, who had been living by himself in a whare at Deep Stream, was found drowned in a creek near his hut at six o’clock this morning. MINER’S NARROW SHAVE. Hokitika, January 9. A miner named Finlay had a nanrow escape from-, death this morning, at the Ross-Goldfields mine, He was coming out of a cross-drive when a shot was being fired in the headway, and he was struck on the breast by a stone, causing a wound which necessitated nine stitches being put in. Finlay was over 120 ft. away from the shot at the time of the occurrence. MYSTERY NEAR TAUMARUNUL Taumarnnui, January 9. On Thursday of last week the local police were informed that a man named Tom Halvey had reached a’ camp at Patunga, ill. He was coming from Tanmarunui, after spending the Christmas holidays in Auckland. Patunga is 16 miles down the Wanganui River. Constable Orchard was despatched to take charge of Halvey, but fon fid that he was missing. A search party scoured the neighborhood ail night without result. Yesterday Constable Orchard proceeded to Kokokonni, and there, near, a river landing,, he found Halvey’* coat and hat. There was no sign of a body. The constable procured a canoe and searched the river several miles without avail.

ACCIDENT TO A WATERSIDER.

Gisborne, January 9

While engaged in unloading railway sleepers from the s.s Ripple at the wharf to-night, a waterside worker named William Cole was struck on the side of the head by an iron rail, and sustained a fracture of the base of the skull, and a depressed fracture of the vault of the skull. His condition is regarded as critical. He is a married man with a family of seven.

MORTALLY INJURED.

Deceased was a teamed man, 52 years old, and his family reside in Ponsonhy. ANOTHER WHARF ACCIDENT. Auckland, January 9. A serious accident occurred on the Queen’s Wharf this afternoon, a laborer, named John Bell being removed to the hospital in an unconscious condition, suffering from severe wounds on the head. Bell and a number of other men had been employed by Dalgety and Company, Ltd., handling wool in “D” Shed. This afternoon it was decided to transfer operations to the upper floor of “F” shed, and instead of going down on to the wharf the men walked over a girder used for supporting the electric crane trolley between the sheds. While one of the.men was inside opening a door, Bell fell off the trolley-way on to the wharf, striking the asphalt with his head.
