Second Edition WHANGAMOMONA SPORTS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.

Officers: Patron, J. 13. Bine, Esq., M.P.; President, W. A. MeCutchan, Esq.; handicappers: Chops-~J. A. Hansen; running: Messrs Bacon, Imndon and Rothery; judges, Messrs D. L. Hatton, V. Klee, and R. G. Fawkaer; starters: -Messrs R. J. Scott and \Y. Hodge; protest committee: Messrs F. W. Court (chairman), A. Klee, L. T. Alyward and W. Nelson; steward in charge of chopping: F.. Lundon; treasurer, R. J. Scott; socretary, A. - McMeekan.

There was a good gathering of Whangarnomona and district residents on the new Whangarnomona Domain on (Thursday afternoon on the occasion of the third annual sports meeting of- the Whanganioniona-Kohuratahi Sports Club. The weathei was all that could be desired, a light breeze tempering the heat of the sun. A number of Stratford residents attended. The secretary (Mr A. McMeekan) and the rest of the committee were -kept* hard at work all day and were untiring in their efforts to please everybody. An excellent luncheon was provided on the ground by Mir* Janes.. Mr J. 13,. Hine, patron of the club, arrived on the ground by motor car—the first car, it was mentioned, which has ever been on the new Domain. The actual gate takings were less than last year, but there was a big increase in the number of mem hers' tickets sold. NOTES OX THE SPORT.

Proceedings opened with the novice local chop, in which a big field competed. The chopping was not up to pitch, though several, of the competitors showed signs of promise for the future. . A good held started in the local chop (loin, log), the friuher turning up in J. E. Shewry, who chopped splendidly and won by a big margin, cutting through in 45. 4-ssec. The win .was very popular-, hearty cheers following the"falling of the winner's block. The second and third men finished some time afterwards. Some competitors had little more done after getting round when everything was over, and one even did not get round. However, the day was one for experts, anybody ont of form or practice standing very little chance. The 18in. standing chop made a*, interesting contest, and a number used the scratching pen a good field finally started. J, Xewstaoski made the best showing at, the start, having a good bite out of his first scarf before Shewry, on scratch, got going. Newstroski turned round first, Shewry appearing to have a tough block. B. Newstroski was the second

to get round, but his first scarf was

,4iot attractive looking and did not seem S '.; to belting to"a winner. In his second scarf his pace, never great or stylish, • went to bits and he progressed slowly. J. Xewstroski went on well, putting in vigorous and pretty work. 'Shewry began to bite better into his block on the second scarf, making

great progress; but J. Xewstroski kept up at his fine pace and cut \jjhrough a few seconds before Shewn Tho third man was some time behind. The Taranaki Champion Chop was a good contest, seven facing the starter. Ned Shewry won by a small ruar- . gin from Rawlinson, M. Rodgers,'being some time behind in third place. .). Xewstroski ma do an endeavour to set a merry pace and turned round early with Shewry, but his second scarf went slowly. He struck a knot soon after . starting it, and he was among those who did not finish. The finish between Shewry and Rawlinson was very close, and there were a number who differed from the judges' decision and held that Rawlinson's block was firston the ground. There, was a good finish in the 15in. underhand chop, the win of the local men being loudly applauded. Tho eftra chop.provided a good finish. Itawlmson finished with several

seconds to spare, but several men were in the running for second place. The most amusing item of the day was the committeemen's, chop, some of the contestants showing considerable ignorance of the timber-chewing art. There were only three competitors in the double-handed sawing, which provided a good contest. Two or three seconds separated Shewry and Xewstroski at the finish, and Condon was not far behind. W. Syme (Stratford) had everything his own way in the 100yds open running handicap. He got away well, staved off a stiff challenge by Gates just before reaching the tape, and won by a yard. Jones was four yards further back and Little was well out of it. In the quarter-mile run the pace was steady at the end of the first loOyds, the men going along easy in the positions as they started. Then Syme headed Shewry and ran out to a lead' 'of three yards. Gates was lying well back. The positions were unchanged coming into the straight, but Shewry challenged and wore Syme down till the'finish, Syme just- winning by inches. Gates' position was not improved at the finish. Owing to insufficient entries the 220yds race was abandoned. The half-mile run was disappointing. Erew and Stockley retired at about a quarter of a mile, and Gates, wlien leading and running well, retired, with a circuit to go, believing the race was over. Shewry finished as he liked. W. Syme got most points in the r>ppn running races, butiowing to the 220yds race not being run the committee- declined to award the prize. Tim finish of the 100yds district race vs. close, Xed Shewry and G. Syme

having a good tussle for first honors. The committeemen's run was as amusing of things of the kind usually

are. As a result of a subsequent dispute over their respective merits two of the contestants ran the race over again the stake being a suit of clothes.

The two ladies' races (married and unmarried) seemed to lie lhgmy interesting to the spectators, though the running was hardly up to world's championship form.

Twenty-five contestants tried conclusions in the competition for throwing the cricket ball, and the winninp throw (89yds) was a highly creditable

Tossing the sheaf proceeded during the whole of the day, the winner's best throw being 28ft Gin., which was very creditable. The height was greater than at the Stratford Show, but the sheaf was lighter. DETAILED RESULTS.
