A CLERGYMAN’S DEATH.

THE STEAMER TASMAN.
Sydney, January 5
The Dutch mail steamer Tasman, which went ashore at Bramble Bay and was afterwards refloated, left Thursday Island for Java on Sunday. ,i he damage to the vessel was not so s >rious as was anticipated, and tem--1 wary repairs were effected.
A PRISONER’S ESCAPE.
Melbourne, January 5. A prisoner named Clarke escaped from the city lock-up a fortnight ago. Detectives discovered that he had a ranged to be married on Saturday
night. With the prospective bride they hid iu the house, and when Clarke arrived there was a desperate s ■ rugs; 10. Clarke knocked down the detectives, slipped out of his coat, and again escaped.
A CHARGE OF MURQER.
Sydney, January 5
A Lick Mariner, aged 41, a colored man, has been charged with having murdered Patrick Sullivan, who died in a hospital with a fractur.ed skull. Mariner alleges that lie struck Sullivan in sell-defence. He was remanded.
N.S.W. RAILWAYS.
(Received 9.2 d a.m. ) Sydney, January 6. The term of Mr Johnston, chief railway commissioner, ends in February. Pending reconstruction of the railway commission by legislation, Mr Harper, traffic commissioner, will act as chief commissioner.
