The great event of the year! was to have beep the opening of the Panama Canal, but this long anticipated ami long looked for blessing is still in the future. As to trade and > commerce, statistics indicate a good year, and during the present twelve* , months New Zealand is likely to get into closer touch than ever before in her trade relations witli America. f
