DE VOTED "SIC NALMEN.ij
There was an impressive and unprecedented funeral service 1 at Portsmouth over the unrecoverable remains of the signalmen who lostwtheir lives in the recent fire which, destroyed the dockyard semaphore and surrounding buildings. Flags on all the ships in port were flown at half-mast.
After the Church service, relatives of the dead men, representatives of the' naval and" .military authorities, and contingents of men from all the warships went in a procession to the ruins of the semaphore tower. There dockyard workmen assembled, the “Last Post” was sounded, and volleys were fired.
It is understood that Signalman Pook perished in an effort to save secret signal books.
