THE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. WALLACE AND DICKIE IN FORM [Per Press Association.! Auckland, December 30. The finals of the New Zealand tennis championships were completed on Eden and Epsom courts to-day in the presence of a large gathering. On the whole, the play was of a high standard, and very few left the courts at the end of the play without

feeling that the tennis had been worth while. A feature of the tournament was the success of A. CJ. Wallace and C. J, Dickie, of the Waverley Club, Taranaki, who carried oft the doubles championships' and also filled the positions of champion and runner-up in the singles. It is some years since the Taranaki players took part in a. New Zealand championship, and this makes their success all the mure creditable.

Miss A. Gray (Auckland) followed up her success of last year and annexed the single championship.. With Miss Baird, she also carried off -lie ladies’ doubles. The results arc as follow

LADIES’ SINGLES. The final was contested by Misses A. Gray (Auckland) and R. Baird (Hawke’s Bay). The first set was all in favor of Miss Gray, who played consistently. The set went to her, 6—2. Miss Baird played up well in the second set, and at one stage led 6—5. The games then alternated to 7 all, when Miss Gray’s persistence in lobbing gained for her a victory, 9—7. Miss Gray has now won the championship on two successive years and by virtue of this carries off the rose bowl presented by Messrs F. H. Ayres, Ltd.

COMBINED DOUBLES. The outstanding feature of the final between R. If. Tv. Swanstofn and Miss Gray and Olliver and Miss Steele was the brilliant play of Olliver, whose agility at the net gained are alter ace. Olliver and Miss Steele took the first set, 6—l, but lost the second, 5—7. In the final sot, Olliver and Miss Steele played splendidly and won, 6—4.

MEN’S DOUBLES. A. 0. Wallace,and G. W. Dickie mot Abbott and McCittcheon in the final. A good game was expected,hiit the Taranaki men won easily, o — 3, G — l, G — o. ip | :i >■ '■ *

■*M‘ MEN’S SINGLES. Dickie boat Wallace in the first set, 7 —5, and led £he .secopd,, but his condition then gave out, and Wallace forged ahead, playing, with great accuracy. Wallace took the next two sets, G—2, G—2, aiul then Dickie, owing to his condition giving out, retired.
