SHACKLETON'S PROBLEM.

London, December 30

Sir Ernest Shackleton, when interviewed, said that his expedition may solve the complete problem of the continental nature of the Antarctic regions, including the assumed mountain ranges. His journey will be longer than that to the Pole and hack and infinitely more difficult, as he will have no depot, hut will ho always advancing. More than half the distance will ho over a new route.

It the conditions are good and the party is up to time, he added, lie intends to strike from the Pole on t new trail, keeping on the plateau behind the Western Mountains and coming out at Wood Bay. Otherwise lie will use Scott’s track or Amundsen’s track. The trans-con-tinental party should be able to report progress in April, 1915.

FIXING UP DETAILS. (Received 8.30 a.m.) London, December 30. Sir Ernest Shackleton estimates the cost at £50,000 if properly carried our, and lie does not intend to make a public appeal. He states that Marston, the artist, has rejoined the party. All the members will learn cooking and wireless installation. The latter will enable them to communicate with the base. Tf the sledge parties use the Aurora to navigate Weddcl Sea, which is a difficult journey, another ship will await the party in Rossio. The vessel will he fitted with tanks and will bring back fish, seals, and penguins.

Lieutenant Evans will lie in command of the boat, and Boldness will be in charge of the transpolar journey.
