STRATFORD RACING CLUB.
MEETING OPENS TO-MORROW.
The prospects still appear bright for the opening of the Stratford .Racing Club’s annual race meeting tomorrow. The weather has a settled “feel” about it, and nobody could be blamed for being over-sanguine in predicting two ideal summer days for the meeting. Visitors to the course will notice a number of improvements to the course. Chief of these is the fine entrance roadway, which is wide and well-grad-ed. Horse-owners will notice additions to the loose boxes.
The acceptances for all the races are very good, and if all acceptors face the starter some excellent racing should be witnessed and the genus punter (whose name is very, nearly legion) should be provided with ample employment in picking ’em. The New Plymouth Garrison. Band will lender selections throughout the day, and they can be relied on to greatly enhance the pleasure of the meeting.
As usual, special train arrangements have been made, and as trains are running from all quarters at convenient times the number of outside visitors to the meeting should be greater than ever.
The attention of intending patrons is drawn to the fact that gate tickets will he on sale in the streets ; and ithp.se who purchase gate tickets before, reaching the course will not only he studying their own convenience, but will also show consideration for others. It is hoped by this means to ■obviate crowding at the entrance gate. The starting will be in the hands of h ; he well-known Rangitikei sportsman and starter, Mr T. Cameron, who can 'be looked to to satisfactorily carry out the exacting duty of getting the horses away.
SPORT!NT! NOTES.
TO-MORROW’S MEETING.
[By Cicero.]
The acceptances received for the Stratford Ratjing Club’s annual meeting tire' 'splendid, and this yearns fixture will probably (outclass .any pre- r viously held locally. Owners and pub-, lie will appreciate the appointment of MiuT.’ Cameron as jstarter, who, when at his best, is realty llrst-clgss. Proceedings tv ill commence with thb Tariki Welter, for,' which event the large number of sixteen -have paid up.f White Crane (10.-6, including 71 bs penpick of ‘thebut will probably? lib reserved foil ithe; Cup. In her absence,-'Tdatere and: Florist should receive most support.
No less than thirty will figure on the card for the Borough Stakes. Lady Amai showed a lot of pace at New Plymouth, and , will probably see a short price. Zion-as,fast over a short cpup>e, and may take some beating. 'nW remain in-the Cdp. hu| as'Jargon' lias gone wrong he a non-starter. the list, and should 'Maiiapoto’s son be on his best behaviour he ; wilT take some settling. Manawakaha at a pound less has nd cause for, complaint, and if one takes his Christinas Handicap form as a guide-,■ would look no further for a winner. Draft (8.6) ran badly last week and should be held safe by the top weights; Aruake (7.13) ran really well for nine furlongs on Boxing Day, and will probably be .benefited by tire racing received. Invader (7.9) would be better suited over a shorter course, and the same applies to- Tetikftra.; »Of those lower down, ) White Crane tends 1 ' best. i Ngatiruamii, Manawhakaha and Aruake should provide a good contest. The Midhirst Hack has attracted •nine acceptors. Patronymic ran consistently last week, and with 8.9 is not badly treated. The Hurdle probably be a 'repetition of last should!be worth] witnessing, as both'' Kurnalpi and , Timothy hhve not isuf-f fered by the racing. f A i The contestants engajged in the Farmers’ Plate are more or less of unknown quantity,, Cordon. Bell being the only one with public form for a guide.
The Flying Handicap should provide a good race, as Smilax, Tetikura, and Astor are amongst others engaged. A splendid field of twenty-one still remain in the Railway Hack. Hi Game and Manaiaroa may claim -winning chances. , ! « • A puhter at the, Mapawatu meeting on Friday last won nearly £I2OO over Kilrain’s victory in the Manawatu Cup,
