The New Caledonian newspapers nake vigorous protests against the imposed cession of the French interests in the New Hebrides to Britain. The leading journal points out that the French largely predominate in lie group and complains of the influence exercised by English.clergy in idministrative matters. They would >e in the habit of regarding the group :s entirely under their dominance. Phis lias been responsible for much if the ill-feeling. It adds: "If the ommonwealth secured control, New Caledonia would be isolated and Australian ambitions allowed full olav. . The envious glances of the
Commonwealth on France's rich and fertile territory in the Pacific have never been hidden. If the proposal is carried out the Republic's Oceanic future vanishes."
