AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
THE CUP WON BY VOLZKE. Excellent weather prevailed for the second clay •of the Axemen's Carnival at Elthani, and the gate takings were £7 better than the previous year. Everything went off well: The hig chopping cup went to C. Volzke, whose family have always figured well on the Carnival's prize-list. Some exhibition chops were given with kaiwhaka, a wood new to Eltham. it comes, from the Main Trunk area, and is beautiful chopping wood, iln the two events on Saturday several seconds were chipped off previous records. .. Johnson (16sec.) 1, C Miley (Bsec.) 2, C. Dwyer (16sec.), 3. All qualified started. Johnson won'with ease by several seconds, while Miley beat Dwyer by a couple of blows. Time, 53sec.
Championship of New Zealand. First prize £6, second £5, third £l. 12inch standing blocks.—D. Pretty 1, W. Peck 2, J. E. Shewry 3, C. Miley 4. Pretty got in his last blow a fraction ahea'd of the others and secured the championship for the third time, having also won it last year. The toughness of the timber is shown by the slowness of the time, 56'3-Ssec. . SAWING. Double-handed Sawing Championship of Australasia. Two-mile Handicap. First prize £4, second £1 10s, third 10s.—C. Jamieson (100yds) 1, R- J- Jones (45yds) 'J, G. Wallace (145yds) 3. Also started: F: Wells and P. Griffin (30yds behind scratch), B. Campion (40yds), 11. J. Jones (45yds), P. Humm (90yds), and P. Hill (110yds). Wells looked behind and fell and brought down Griffin, leaving C. Janiiesou tb win by a fraction from Jones. Time, smin 3sec. FOOT RACING. 880yds Handicap. First prize £5, second £2, third £l.—F. C. Gates (05yds) 1, T. F. Taylor (10yds) 2, W. McCaul (40yds) 3. Also started: W. Coates (10yds) and A. H. Gleoson (00yds). Time, 2min 2 4-ssec. The children were also kept busy during the day, innumerable races being run for their delectation.
