Mrs Hazzard, the starvation doctor, applied for admission,to the Washington State penitentiary after losing her final appeal against an indeterminate sentence for the manslaughter of Miss Claire Williamson, an Australian girl, who died while undergoing a fast cure. The-prison warden refused admission to the penitentiary on ' Uio ground of the non-receipt of a com-mittal-warrant. Pending its arrival, Mrs Hazzard lodged in an hotel. "_ _ , . Mrs Hazzard, a "starvation doctor," the keeper of a sanatorium i» Washington State, was placed on trial in February, 1912, accused with having caused the death of Claire William. son.
The victim's sister testified as to the severity of the treatment in the sanatorium. She said she had herself been reduced almost to a skeleton when she was a patient there;. Her .sister died while under treatment. A doctor was called in, and, having suspicions of foul play, caused Haazard's arrest. . ° '■'■'. ■
John Herbert, an uncle of the Williamson girls, declared that he believed the body he saw'in the coffin not that of his niece, hut he made no complaint, because he knew that the girl was actually dead. The Williamsons are wealthy Australians. Dorothea Williamson told the jury that.during her last interview with her sister the Hatter said that she had been led to believe that she (Dorothea) was insane. Witness said that Mrs Hazzard placed her hand on the dying girl's abdomen and pressed hard. The girl then became unconscious, and died shortly afterwards. Mrs Hazzard was found guilty of having caused the death of Claire Wil- , liamson, and was sentenced to an .indefinite term of imprisonment from two to 20 years. The application for a new trial "was overruled. by the ; Cour,t, but a Supreme Court appeal ! was allowed. • • ; i ;-i Last October, it was announced that Miss Williamson was suing Dr. ,Hazy.ard for £SOOO damages . for, alleged mistreatment. She also sued a firm of undertakers for allowing an autopsy to be performed on the body of. Miss Claire Williamson, who died while uiidergoing a cure' ; by Dr. iHazzaM?, ~> In March, Dr. Hazzard was again arrested and charged with the death of an American woman tinder similar circumstances to those connected with the death of Miss Williamson. The jury's verdict was that death was due to starvation.
