DEMAND FOR IMPROVEMENT. [By Electric Telegraph—CoptbightJ [United Press Association.] (Received 9.20 a.m.) Sydney, December 29. The federated barmen and barmaids of Xew South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia, have filed a claim in the Arbitration Court demanding an increase of wages and shorter hours. The present minimum wages of barmen is £2 ss, of barmaids £l. They now demand a minimum . of £'3 with equal pay for raeli and women and for equal work in fortyeight hours a week in straight shifts, and not more than nine hours, daily, as against the present- sixty and seventy hours weekly in broken shifts. It is anticipated that in the event of the demands being granted, there will be a considerable -increase in the price of liquors.
