TARANAKI JOCKty CLUB.
JARGON WINS THE OPEN HANDICAP. Recognising the growing popularity it’ their Christinas meeting, the comniittoe of the Taranaki Jockey Club lias made several important alteraions and improvements in tlie appurtenances of the property, and that these were fully justified was reflected in the largely increased attendance on the opening day yesterday. 'I lie "Gather was dull and muggy in the horning and towards noon there was just the suspicion of a drizzle, which, aowever, owing to tlie heat, dried almost as it fell, not even necessitating the general use of one of Taranaki’s indispensable adjuncts—the handy umbrella. The grounds were ooking fresh and green, and there was a state of spick-ahd-rspanness ■verywhere in evidence that was most pleasing. Among the improvements •(footed, the most prominent is A new mtside stand, a convenience approbated to such an extent as to remain packed all the day. ft is in a position half-way up the straight, commanding a splendid view of'the race at i stage when it holds out great possibilities. Other important improvements include an enlarged tbtalisator, ‘he erection of a number of new .stalls, an dthe removal of the stables .further to the hack, aijd also alterations'Tin connection with the public ■ invenienees, etc. The Club is deserving of Congratulations on their tork for the y v ear, arid there is no lonht that as the result they will eap the' reward of erijoyahle and ueeessful meetings in the futrire. Yesterday’s gathering passed off Vithont a hitch. The fields were ;ood ; the racing was interesting; the lividends we're as elusive as the will-/-the-wisp; and the Crowd was a sober one. Whitt more 'could Secroary Webster and Jiis attentive staff vish for, and it must be remembered hat the secretarial department have nit in guiding of the tote figures! the proceedings operi'eci with a hensaion in the shape of a.big dividend in die Hnatoki Plate; Florist carrying; >nly 11 J- tickets on the machine, it • s stated that a local resident was mohg the lucky few to Vstrijce it.” I lie Stewards’ Handicap went to the top weight Zetes, with the Jochlly .iriined.
