Axemen at Play,
THE ELTHAM CARNIVAL.
THE FIRST DAY. The first day of the Axemen’s Carnival was held yesterday at Eltham in beautiful weather. Large crowds turned up, the special train arrangements being largely availed of. The chops and bicycle races provided exciting finishes, a fact which speaks well for the handicapper, Mr J. A. Hansen.
Dave Pretty won the cup for the championship in the two foot blocks. “Jumbo” Wells, the Australian cyclist, did not create a very favourable impression among some of the spectators, who, when he made bis first appearance, remarked: “Too big” ;he can’t ride, anyhow.” “Jumbo” -however managed to win back some good opinion by shaking things up in his first race.. The Eltham Brass Band contributed to the enjoyment with some well-play-ed selections.
Mrs Brooking, of Stratford, provided an excellent luncheon, which was done full justice to. To-day the Carnival will be continued, the principal event in the programme being the Axemen’s Cup.
