About the Island. Dr. ,Bowie and other residents on the island are well known in New Zealand. Last July Mr P. L. Clark, of Dunedin, spent S days on Ambrym with Dr. Bowie, and lie gave a Daily Times reporter some interesting particulars about the island. There are three active volcanoes in the New Hebrides group, he says, the one on Anibyrm be ihg about 3500 ft. in height. Its last violent outburst was in 1894, when a vast amount of damage was done, and the lava flowed down in a molten stream right to the sea. On that occasion, however, the mission property escaped loss. Dr. Bowie's hospital, which has been maintained by the Presbyterian Church of Xew Zealand for about 20 years, is now the best equipped hospital in the whole of the Western Pacific. On occasion the British resident has personally conveyed to Dr.. Bowie the gratitude of the Co vornment to the New Zealand Presbyterian Church and its appreciation o,f the services rendered to British interests in the group generally by maintaining such a splendidly appointed | establishment. The buildings themselves represent an expenditure of about £SOOO, and provide accommoda tion for 80 in-patients. The matron is Nurse Wright, until recently of Pal- ' merston North. Ambrym, which is near the centre of the group, has a circumference of 60 miles, and supports a native population of about 7000.
