THE KIRIKOPUNi AFFAIR. [Per Press Association.] Dargaville, December. 20. Hansen, charged with shooting Align at Kirikopun on Ihursday, iltli inst, was before the Court yesterday. On the application of the police, Hansen was remanded for eight days. On a doctor certifying that Allen was out of danger, bail was allowed, accused in his own recognisances of £IOO and two sureties of £IOO or one of £3OO.
One account of the shooting states that Hansen was pressing Allen to have another drink, and upon receiving a. refusal said he would shoot him. Hansen, who is a foreigner, is known to ha\¥ she Continental idea that for another man to refuse to drink with another is an insult. He. is a middleaged man, who is living a bachelor’s life, being separated from Ids wife. Hansen has a peculiar hobby, which resulted in his promises being converted into an arsenal. All sorts of weapons hang about his room, and these he invariably kept loaded. The weapon with which he injured Allen is a Mauser pistol, carrying .303 softnosed explosive bullet. It is fitted with a safe-trigger catch, and it is believed that Hansen thought the catcli was operating, and, that the pistol would not fire.
