The train was going at high speed arid the driver did not notice the debris. ■ The engine mounted upwards and struck the top of the tunnel. Masses of masonry collapsed. Six coaches were telescoped. 'A panic among the passengers followed. and in the darkness several were trampled to death in attempting tp burrow a way out- of the debiis. Nine of the dead were fearfully mutilated. Fifteen were dangerously iaiured.
