WEATHER REPORTS.
YESTERDAY’S GALE.
A severe gale blew in Stratford all yesterday, and the weather was extremely cold for the time of year. Those whose business took them out of doors found things very disagreeable and considerable damage was done by tlie wind to vegetable and flower gardens. The gale was pretty general on the coast. Quite a large number of breaks in telegraph lines it being stated that seventeen pole-s were down south of Hawera; Gangs of linesmen got to work, however, and by midnight telegraphic communication again approached normal. Owing to the gale the Rarawa was unable to leave New Plymouth for Onehunga, and her departure was postponed till this afternoon. In Wanganui a number oi streets are flooded, as also are certain suburban areas, a result of 36 hours’ continuous rain. At Palmerston the gale was also felt, the Manawatu river being in flood. A message from Timqru states that the present bids fair to he the wettest early summer on record. Rust has got into the oats and the wind is flattering them. A heavy wheat crop, however, is anticipated. Mr Newton, the manager, informs us that the local Electrical Supply Company had a fortunate experience of yesterday’s gale. Only one of their wires came down, and that, it must he mentioned, had been erected twelve or thirteen years ago. The gale about 3.30 in the afternoon did this slight damage, the locality being at the railway crossing on Pembroke Road.
