Richardson, commander of the Ulster volunteers, suddenly mobolised a signalling and despatch-riding corps, to test its efficiency and readiness in the event of the withdrawal of the postal and telegraph services. Four hundred motor-cyclists participated, and despatches were carried with remarkable celerity throughout Ulster.

Sir Edward Carson and Professor O’Neill, of Dublin, attended a meeting at Cork to form a volunteer branch. Professor O’Neill, during the opening of his speech, called for cheers for Sir Edward Carson. The crowd rushed the platform and drove out the speakers, the meeting ending in disorder.

Mr Bryce, speaking at the Liberal Club, said he did not find either Australia or New Zealand advocating separation from the Mother Country. It would mark decline if the British example of uniting liberty and order were ever to suffer at our hands. Everywhere lie had travelled he found the colonies had taken England as their model.
