quarterly meeting. _ • The quarterly meeting of the Strutford Licensing Gommitetee was held to-day. Present: Messrs G. W. lv. Kem-'ick (chairman), A. Meredith, J. Masters, W. Morison, J. Therkleson, and H. B. Curtis. , J. Q. Parsons applied for a permanent license for the Mount Egmont Hotel.

Sergeant McNeely mentioned the recent charges against the licensee and other persons found wrongly on the premises. A written eomplaint was received from F. S. Smaill to the effect that on Sunday, November 23rd, he was refused a bed at the hotel. He was going from Waitara to Hawera bymotor cycle, and at Midhirst his cycle broke down and he desired to stay for the night. He wrote that he had been refused a bed when he asked first and was not granted a shakedown- -when he requested it. He spent the night on the verandah in the rain.

'Mr R., Spence said that the licensee was undoubtedly: wron gin allowing people to remain wrongly on his premises. At the time the charge against the licensee was heard the Magistrate had given the licensee a sufficient warning, which he (counsel) was sure the. licensee had taken full notice of. Sergeant McNeely said that on searching the register he found thdt on the. night in question the whole of the rooms- were hooked except oile, which had been occupied the night before and might have been required on the night in.question. Mr Kenrick r referring to Mr Smaill’s complaint, said it would have been preferable if Mr Smaill had personally appeared so that he might have been cross-examined.

Mb Spence said that Mrs Parson's cottld swear that she refused a bed, that she told the complainant where he could get a bed arid that she ieceived no further application from him. Mr Kenrick said that if complainant had personally appeared .he could have enlightened the Court on tiiis matter.

After consultation Mr Kenrick said the bench could not consider the written evidence of h.e had pc 1 ', sonally appeared %yc. done so. In the mattef^ Court proceedings the bench -thoviglH it was- not necessary to say anything further. .... -

An application was made for the removal of the license of the loko Junction Hotel to a different site.' Mr A. D. Blick, architect r for the' building, said the whole of the new building would be ready for occupation within a week. ’ In reply to the chairman Mr Tslu;k said storage for two thqnpapd gallons of water was provided. j 51 _ . Mr Kenrick elicited’ that provision had been made for a further supply of water from a well. I|e. exi>ressq<l the opinion that in the ca'se»of a hotel the minimum supply should be fixed somewhere ’in the vimnity of ten thousand gallons. Afters lengthy perusal of the plans of the hotel-it was decided'to sanction the removal.
