Mr F. G. Hartley, manager of the branch of the National Bank at Outram, has received notice of his transfer to Stratford.

Mr A. H. Cotton, of Jordan, lias consented to stand as an IndependentLiberal at the next general election for the Bay of Islands, states a Press Association telegram from Whangarei.

Lord Sandhurst, Lord Chamberlain of England, has been operated on for appendicitis. He is in a critical condition, states a London cablegram.

Sir Joshua Williams, who is making his concluding visit to Southland in connection with the Supreme Court, was entertained at a complimentary banquet on Saturday night by the Southland Law Society.

Captain W. Wright, Reserve of Officers, 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles), has been granted an extension of leave for two years, as from October 10th, 1913, with permission to absent himself from the Dominion during that period.

The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Annie Steer, wife of Mr W. S. Stem, late of Toko, but now of Pembroke Road. For some time Mrs Steer had not . enjoyed good health. The intmment takes place at the Kopuatama Cemetery to-morrow.

The Duchess of Connaught has recovered from her indisposition, which it is declared was slight and that thei e was no cause for alarm. Tt is understood that the Duke of Connaught s term of Governor-General of Canada is likely to depend oh the Duchess s health.

The death of Mr Matthew Stett, one of the. oldest and best known residents of Ashburton County, is recorded by the Press Association. He was born in Scotland in 1842, and arrived m New Zealand and commenced farming .n the Ashburton district in 1862. He was a countv councillor-and a member t the Road Board and many local institutions for many years.

Mr E H. Hiley, the new General Manager of Railways, accompanied by Mr T. Ronayne, his predecessor m office, passed through to New Plymouth on Saturday on a tour of inspection. This morning he went over the eastern branch line, and this afternoon visited the Mount Egmont branch. He returned later to Wanganui.
