The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1913 THE KINEMA IN SCHOOLS.

The London County Council lias for the present decided against the .kinematograph in schools, but the trade is not discouraged. ()ik> of. the biggest firms in London, a correspondent states, is arranging what it calls "weekly educational matinees" to be given m the chief theatres of each district in London on Saturday mornings. By way of co-ordinating the films with teaching in the schools the teachers will be supplied in advance with a programme of the next matinee, so that they can make use of the pictures as illustrations. This scheme has grown out of an experimental series of exhibitions to school children during the last summer holidays which took place

in twenty-two theatres in London, the programmes being arranged hy the schoolmasters. It was naturally a great success, and the police were kept husy controlling the children al the doors. There is no douht that children will he keen enough to go to the educational matinees, although, of course, the educational value ol the kinema is still a matter of con-

troversy. Tin.', usefulness of thematinops will depend a good deal on the extent to which the teachers lend their aid. Each programme includes nine films giving glimpses of the ways of birds, beasts, and plants, with something of geography and travel, a dash of science, and "a few humorous and trick films, to' avoid any sense ot heaviness."
