STRATFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING, Tlio monthly meeting of the School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Smart tin the chair), Hancock, McMillan, Staples, Cookes and Jones. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. J ackson, who was at the Wanganui Show. Leave of absence was granted to Mr Jackson and also to Mr P. Skoglnnd. HEADMASTER'S RE PORT.

The headmaster (Mr F. Tyrer) reported; The ainniid public examinations will begin throughout New Zealand to-morrow, when candidates for the Civil Service Junior and for Senior Scholarship examinations will present themselves at the various centres. The examination for this centre i_ is being held in the local Technical School, and arrangements have been made to accommodate 74 candidates. The examination extends over a week. On the 27th and 28th hist, candidates for the Junior National and .Hoard’s Junior Scholarships will be taken. The literary part of the' Bayly Memorial candidates’ work will also be taken on these dates. The University examinations then begin on December 2nd, and will be continued to December 10th. The date for holding the athletic competitions in connection with the Bayly Memorial Scholarship is still to be fixed by the Rugby Union. 1 recommend as the most suitable date for this competition December 11th, The annual examination of the school was held some weeks ago and the report of the Inspectors will be before you for consideration. .As is usual in such repoits the work of the infant department is not very fully commented on, and I think b only fair that your members should know that some of the best of our work * this year has been done in this department by Miss Pa ops and her able assistant, Miss Cuthbert. 1 am notified that the Government Medical j Officer is to visit the Stratford school on November 28th and December Ist for the purpose of inquiring into the

I The Visiting Committee reported:— Fencing Horse Paddock at School j Grounds: It will he necessary to erect a new fence, as the present one is beyond repair. The wire is rusted and quite useless. We measured the length of fencing required and find that it is about ten chains, and we recommend that hinau, totara, or j hroadleaf posts be used, also that the portion facing Fenton Street be erected with sawn jmsts, ft will require j four gate-posts and five strainers. We 1 estimate the cost at £l6 ss. Laying j Water to Horse Paddock: We find that the water-main runs down ’Chiton Road and the Borough Council if applied to, will put the water on to the paddock. All that will be requir- | ed will he about four feet of piping, i tap, float and trough. We estimate j the cost, at £2 55.-—The report is to | he forwarded to the Education Board ; through Mr Masters. GENERAL. ft was decided that during the j summer months the committee meet i pit 8 p'.'ih. The secretary of the Education ! Board wrote that the Board had de- j t ided that schools in the district might j be closed on November 20th to allow j the children to attend the Central j (New Plymouth) School’s carnival.— j No action taken. The chairman of the New Plymouth School Committees Association wrote that they had decided against forming an association to embrace the whole of the education district, but had formed a purely local association, hoping that in some future time other associations might become affiliated and make a district body possible.—The whole matter was loft in the hands of the sub-committee previously appointed to deal with it. The following circular was received from the Inspector-General of Schools: I am directed tp announce that the document issued by the Navy League purporting to be an official certificate of visitation to H.M.S. New Zealand has been published and issued without authority. Captain Halsey authorised his signature to be fixed to a docn-

ment of the kind ; hut as far as can he ascertained there is no authority for the use of the seal affixed to the certificate. In some places the certificate was sold without inquiry as to whether the purchaser had visited the ship or 'not.
