OBITUARY.

GEORGE LAURENSON, M.P. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, November 19. Mr Laurenso'n, M.P. tor Lyttelton, died this morning. [The late Mr Laurenson has represented Ly ttclton since 1899. He held the portfolios of Customs, Labor and Marine in the Mackenzie Cabinet, from March to July of last year. He was a Shetlander by birth, arriving in the country 37 years ago with his parents. A fortnight after his arrival he obtained a position in a ship chandler’s, afterwards having a proprietary interest in the business, selling out in 1904. He served nine years on the Lyttelton Borough Council and had even a longer connection with the Lyttelton Harbor Board. In bus Parliamentary career he was notable for his persistent advocacy of his principles, in a recent session even proposing the shifting of the capital Irom Wellington, so that the land value caused by the presence of the capital might be secured for the State Plus proposal of his was defeated by fifteen votes. He did useful work as Chairman of the Local Bills Committee and was for a time one of the Liberal whips, but had to relinquish this duty owing to a Breakdown in health.]
