ACCIDENTAL DEATH.
[Per Press Association.] Dunedin, November 16
The body of James Wishart, aged six years, who was drowned in the Taieri river on November 1, was found on Beattie’s Beach on the Peninsula yesterday morning. At the inquest evidence showed that the river was level with the bank at the time of the tragedy, and dipped very suddenly. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
BURNED TO DEATH. Christchurch, November 16. Will iam Perrin, a single man, was burned to death at Sumner early this morning. Deceased, who resided with Ids brother, Fred Perrin, in Wakeheld Avenue, is supposed to have come home about midnight. Shortly after that hour, Mrs Perrin was awakened by deceased groaning or calling out, and immediately made the discovery that the house was in flames. Mr and Mrs Perrin and their children had barely time to escape, getting to safety in their night clohes. Efforts to reach the deceased were fruitless, the flames driving his would-be rescuers back, and it was not till the fire brigade had subdued the flames that deceased’s body, terribly charred, was recovered from the ruins and removed to a stable at the Marino Hotel. The fire apparently had its origin in deceased’s room, at the back of the house, and soon enveloped the whole building, which was one of four rooms.
