Hopkins was the driver of, a motor car -which knocked down and fatally injured Thomas Clemond Thorpe on the Mangero road, on October 19. After' further evidence had been given by several persons who witnessed the accident, on the same lines as the evidence called'at the inquest, Detective Scott went into the box and deposed that when accused wafc arrested he said that he had given £l6O, which he had borrowed to the deceased lad's parents. Witness understood that this gift was made because the accused was- sorry for the lad, not because he admitted any liability. Mr E. C. Gutten, S.M., said that it was one of those unfortunate cases over which he had no' jurisdiction. Accused was, therefore, committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
