The recent rising was frustrated by a spy named Laneastre, an Oporto cycle agent, who ingratiated himself into the good grace of [he Royalists until he was regarded as their most v uluabl agent. Laneastre. who was acting in connivance with the Oporto police, was allowed to escape while a Royalist prisoner. He helped to smuggle arms into Portugal, conveyed the Royalists’ correspondence abroad, effected the secret entry of the leaders Countinho and Count Mangualde into Portugal, and kept the Government aware of every Royalist action.
