LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The receipts at the Palmerston show show a decrease of £313 on the previous year's. The annual meeting of the Gun Club is to be held at the County Hotel at S o'clock this evening. Messrs E. Jackson, W. L. Kennedy, and W. H. H. Young were last night appointed a committee by the Chamber of Commerce to arrange for a picnic to the Ohura country during the coming autumn. Mr Kennedy told the Chamber of Commerce last night that from what he knew he was satisfied that the Land Board intended to declare the Whangamomona saddle a scenic reserve. -'- '' '' ■'■ • •• . i'. '. .\ .' Mr Alexander of Midhirst, ,has, invited a. public meeting of : residents and those interested to be held in the-'Midhirst public Hall on Tues-i' day, November 18th,. for the'purpose of discussing a, proposal.to acquire! the Hall from the County Council. All those interested are invited to attend. Messrs Joseph McCluggage and S. B. Hunter, J.P.'s., presided at the Court this morning when a first-offend-ing drunkard, who had been remanded for a week foiymedical jttrofttment, was;

lined -3s and ordered_to pay 15s medical expenses.., A prohibition order was ,also issued against, him,,'.. . , ,;,

Mr E. Jackson reported to the Chamber of Commerce last night ihaf he had recently visited the Mountain House. 7he County "Council had put its bit of road in excellent order. He (Mr Jackson) had ordered an extra man on the job oh the road inside the reserve, and he was satisfied that this season it would be possible to run t motor car to the house. Mr Richards said those who used the Mountain House owed a debt of gratitude to Mr Jackson for the interest he took in it.

From a private note we learn, says the "Ohura Advocate," that a party of Whangamomona and district residents.intend paying a visit to Ohura about 'Xmas. time. Among the visitors will be teams representing the Tahora Tennis Club and the AYhangaRifle and CrickeT Clubs. Several ladies are also making the.trip. We hope our settlers and townspeople will unite in arranging a suitable programme in order to fittingly entertain the visitrs. The sugestion has been made to us that it would be better to arrange for the visit some time before or after the holidays, as some of The Ohura boys will be away at Christmas time. Hut then, some of the AVhangaites might not be able to obtain leave at any time other than the holidays. However, our southern friends may be assured of a cordial welcome at any time they choose to visit the Ohura.

As a usual thing, nobody takes much notice of the kindly advice tendered by the railv,-ay authorities to all and sundry, to wit "Stop! Look out for the Engine" ; and there are, no doubt, many people who imagine that the notice can be ignored with impunity—That if they give the undertaker a job as a result of a vain argument with a train the matter is done and finished with. But the railway by-laws provide that persons caught disregarding the notice may be haled to the Court and fined ; and one resident of Stratford is to appear at the Court on Friday to answer for not stopping at a railway crossing. Other business before the Court is as foldows: Sixteen civil cases (four defended), two judgment summons cases, and one information each for exposing unvaccinated cattle for sale, excessive drinking and obscene language.

The monthly meeting of the Cham- : her of Commerce was hekl last night. Present: Messrs J. B. Richards (inj the chair), W. P. KirlAvood, P. Thomson, E. Jackson, W. ft. Kennedy, W. H. H. Young,. A. F. Grant, W. J. Munro, and 1). J- Malone. The secretary reported that no reply had been received from tlie Railway Department regarding the through checking of luggage from Taranaki railway stations to Onehunga.—lt was decided to again approach the Department. Mr Richards reported that the representations of the Chamber in respect of the Kaitieke block had been given effect to, in part at least; and settlers had informed him that they were well satisfied.
