The death of Sir ’William Preece, engineer, is reported by London cablegram. Sir William held a number of important engineering positions connected .with telegraphy and telephony and has collaborated in works on the subject. Ho was a fellow of the Boyah Society.

; Jack Howard was charged at the Court; this morning with having on October 25 th driven a gig m l>a ß c : Street .without a light. He stated that it was, .not, dark at the time. Borough Inspector Barlow said the time was 7.35 pan. Defendant: His watch must have been ten minutes fast. Mt watch showed twenty-five past seven.

The Inspector: My watch was absolutely correct. Defendant stated that he had come into town to get the trier lights., The S.M. convicted Tine, hut 1 advised him not to cut 'it so tine in future.;

At the Arbitration Court at. Wclliugtou yesterday, John Touch, a waterside worker, sought compensation from the Union Steamship Company for injury through an accident while working on the Mapomika on June 3, through being struck on tin head by a falling block. He would eventually become quite blind, and possibly lose his reason. The company had paid Pooch 31s 2d weekly since the accident, but a lump sum was asked for. Finally it was agreed (states the Tress Association) that C2UO bt paid down, and the balance, about £195, to the Public Trustee. , The monthly meeting of the W -C • T.U. was held on Thursday afternoon at the residence of Mrs 1C H. White, ilcH-au Street. The annual report was read and confirmed. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs T. White; vicepresidents, Mesdames Peeve, Ldley. Cameron, Header and Kennedy ; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Hi.dsall; reporting secretary, Mrs R- H. I ' ,tl > cradle roll, Mrs J. Boon, assisted bj Mrs Pinney. Mrs A. Douglas, ot New Plymouth, gave an interesting account of the work done by the Aew Plymouth Society.
