TAMMANY DEFEATED.
THE AMERICAN ELECTIONS. VICTORY FOR FUSIONISTS. [By Electric ijxegraph—Copy incur [United Press association.] New York, November s*. Mitchell, a Fusionist, has been elected Mayor. The Fusionists retained control of the , Board of . Estimates. Tammany was defeated by great pluralities and hardly saved the smaller country offices from the general wreckage of its plans. , Tammany is practically without representation upon the board which administers the civic, finances. The Democrats won the civic elections throughout Massachusetts, and also State elections in Virignia. The president personally participated in the contest in New Jersey, seeking to elect Mr James Fielder as Governor.
Governor Sulzer was elected iyssembly man for the sixth New York district by a large majority. Riots marked the elections at Garry, Indiana, where there were several injured.
The Republicans gained heavily throughout the New York States, the Democrats losing control of the Lower House.
A COMPLETE DEFEAT.
THE INFLUENCE OF WOMEN. (Received 11.35 a.m.) New York, November 5. Tammany’s defeat is complete, the plurality vote for the Fusion Mayoralty candidate exceeding 100,000. Anti-Tammanyites won the State Legislature,. to which Sulzer was returned. It is now thought probable that Sulzer will be elected chairman, thus making a long step towards again becoming Governor. Press comment indicates scepticism that Tammany is permanently defeated, pointing out that the institution has been able to recover marvellously from even worse blows than the present. Women, although they cannot vote, are credited with largely influencing the result.
