The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1913. THE POSITION TO-DAY.
It is quite evident that the country is thoroughly aroused at the iniquity jOi the strike in Wellington, Auckland and other centres, by the response accorded to the call for special constables and men willing to work in any capacity in the restoration of law and order, and mounted men are pouring into the cities with this end in view. Me fully believe that in the great majority of instances these men have gone with a deep sense of-duty and responsibility, and while anxious that true arbitration and industrial peace should prevail, are determined that anarchy shall not dominate the
land. That is as it should be. If it were possible that there could be indifference as to the outcome of the present strikes, the domestic aspect—even in places far removed from the ■actual centres of strife—will have some bearing, and housewives generally throughout the country to-day find the purchasing power of the already overstrained sovereign again curtailed, and to such an extent that it will mean in many homes the serious, shortening of the food supplies for the family. That at least will bring home to every corner something of the folly of the agitator’s work. To-day the position is not greatly altered, the Prime 'Minister having announced that the workers having submitted proposals for a settlement he lias undertaken to get
the employees to agree to a turther eouference. .In the meantime the situation is simply one of further delay and suspense.
