LABOR DAY.

The matter of public holidays still causes a good deal of trouble and uncertainty. Next Monday is Labor Day, and the State decrees, in consequence, that very many businesses and industries shall cease work. But others are left alone and go as they please. Haw era, Eltham and Inglewood, our nearest neighbors, all keep uniform holidays on Monday. In Stratford the Banks, legal offices, factories, Government offices, and some other establishments will close down for the day, but so far as the retail traders are concerned there is a nick of unanimity, and some leading shop keepers express annoyance that a holiday has not been declared. These matters are difficult of adjustment, but the position is certainly unfortunate.
