THE LABOR MARKET.
DOWN IN CANTERBURY. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, October 22. Mr Howard, secretary of the General Laborers’ Union, stated to-day that there was still a largo amount of unemployment in the city. Men were ready to go to the country, but wore informe* that work was scarce there, pending the operation of shearing on the stations. Asked regarding the statement that the farmworkers were holding out for higher wages, Mr Kennedy, secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural Laborers’ Union, said that many inen were determined not to accept less than 25s to 27s 6d weekly. Fiirfncrs paying 30s have the pick of the men. He did not there was' any shortage of farm labor if a proper wage were paid. Tl io Mayor says the position in the city seems little more acute than usual for this time of the year.
