The Beiliss trial was marked by frequent conflict by the opposing counsel reflecting on religions or party antagonisms. The interest was heightened by the examinations of Chibryak and his family owing to the general belief that Vera knows and conceals the whole truth relating to the murder. There was a strong divergence between the husband’s and the wife’s testimony. COURT WITNESSES THREATENED Times—Sydney Sun Special Cables (Received 8.0 a.m.) St. Petersburg, October 17. Linde, a girl witness, repeated a story incriminating Beiliss, but finally burst into tears and declared that the secret police threatened she would die like her brother unless she did so. The judges, witnesses, and defending counsel, daily receive a multitude oj anonymous letters containing threats
