ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
I SELF-ADMINISTERED POISON. [Pkb Pkess [Association.] Auckland, October 15. Thomas W. Collin, a laborer, aged 31, was admitted to the Auckland hospital about one o'clock this morning suffering from poisoning. l'or several days lie appeared to he suffering from mental .stress, ami shortly after midnight it was discovered that he was showing- signs of irritant .poison. His condition ,is still very critical. BURIED BY A LANDSLIDE. Uisborne, October 16. At 8.30 this morning, whilst excavation work was proceeding at- the reservoir site, at Waingako, 20 miles from Gisborne, a landslide caused the timber work to give way, and three men were caught in the tunnel. One named Wilds was extricated, but Fletcher and Houston are reported toJ;avo been buried in the debris. A gang is working hard, endeavoring to ■effect a rescue. Later. It is reported from "Waingako that tjie three men engulfed are dead. Mr Wykes, foreman at Waingake, states that he heard a thud and on i investigating found that the mouth of the tunnel used -to bring spoil from the excavation W ! the hillside had collapsed: About two tons of spoil had fallen, and it was evident that the three men working in iho tunnel' were just passing below with a truck load of spoil when the falloccurred,- completely burying them. llescue operations were promptly commenced, and the bodies of ;l,il Hie three men were recovered within twenty minutes.
Frank Wilds had been only three days on the job and trie other two, D. Fletcher and H. Houston, eight days, the ihen having come from the Matawai railway works; The engineer is unable to account for the slip, considering that the ber work supporting the tunnel was; substantial.
