Mr E. Simmonds, lately porter at the Stratford railway station; left on Tuesday for Onehunga, where he has been promoted to the post Ho is replaced in Stratford by Mr Pullar, from Waitotara.
The members of the Stratford Club
entertained their lady friends last
pighfc at a mos.t enjoyable function, a large number of ladies being present. "Mrs Carbery acted as bostess and the guests were also received by Mr R. Sponce, vice-president, in the absence of the president. Cards, billiards and dancing were indulged in and a very pleasant evening was spent.
The death was announced yesterday from Dunedin, of Mr Robert Swing, who was well-known in banking circles in Otago.- The deceased gentleman entered the service of the Colonial Bank in 1880, and two years later was promoted to the. managership at Palmerstoh South. In 1894 he was appointed manager there. A year later he went back to Palmerston as the local manager of the Bank of New SWttland, and stayed there until his retirement from the service at the end of 1898. He was a prominent member of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and acted as honorary judge for several seasons.—P. A. • •
